Bhopal: New software at Barkatullah University soon to check thesis plagiarism

Bhopal-based Barkatullah University (BU) will soon become the first university in the state to have a mechanism in place to stop plagiarism. The university has decided to purchase a software that will help detect plagiarism. Apart from this, the university will also get the copyright on the thesis of their PhD candidates under Intellectual Patent Regime (IPR).

BU vice chancellor MD Tiwari said, "Plagiarism in PhD thesis seems to be a major concern in the academic world when many a scholar, instead of putting in hard labour, chose the shortcut and copy the thesis submitted earlier. To stop repetition or copying of the PhD thesis, the university would create a set-up and install the software to detect plagiarism."
"BU will also get copyright of the works so that PhD candidates can continue their research on a subject. The copyright would definitely improve the research work of the university both in terms of quality and quantity. The new researches would be done in different field including arts, science and commerce," he added.
The initial budget of the whole project is Rs 2 crore. Work on it would start from the next academic year. Professors have welcomed the initiative but they feel proper monitoring and execution would have to be done effectively for the project to succeed.
Department of regional planning and economic growth, professor HS Yadav said, "The V-C is going to take a very good initiative which would improve the rank of the university."
"The software has been installed Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi so it is easy to check plagiarism. But BU has several affiliated colleges and it will be hard for the academics department to check copying and repetition. So the V-C will have to get the ordinance passed to change the provision to stop plagiarism with the help of this software. Besides change in provision, a monitoring wing would also be set-up to execute the project properly," he added.
Currently, students submit the thesis directly to their respective colleges, which later makes way to the academics department at the university.
ABOUT THE AUTHORShruti TomarI have spent over a decade chronicling Madhya Pradesh’s political and social landscape, covering politics, investigative journalism, crime, human interest, and government policy, blending sharp insight with ground‑level depth. I have closely tracked three assembly elections, three Lok Sabha elections, leadership transitions in MP while exposing governance lapses, tender irregularities, and flawed policy rollouts. My reports have revealed gaps in the Cheetah project, irregularities in medical education, rigging in recruitment exams, and loopholes in policy implementation. In crime reporting, I have moved beyond FIRs to map systemic patterns — from organised crime networks and gender‑based violence to custodial accountability — balancing urgency with sensitivity. My journalism is defined by a commitment to human interest. I have profiled the marginalised Bancchda community, documented atrocities against tribal groups, and highlighted efforts to preserve their culture through heritage liquor and revival of spiritual practices. I have reported on farmers struggling with failed MSP promises, giving voice to those often reduced to statistics in policy files. Passionate about field reporting, I have reported on rampant sand mining in Chambal and Narmada, pharmaceutical companies supplying medicines under altered names, the dire condition of schools and colleges, the plight of commercial sex workers, and skewed sex ratios in specific districts. Beyond deadlines, and as HT’s state correspondent and assistant editor in Madhya Pradesh, I engage with ministers, farmers, students, and activists, believing the best policy stories begin with a single human voice. A postgraduate in Journalism and Mass Communication, I also hold a diploma in sports journalism.Read More
