In a bizarre incident, a sub-adult male tiger died at Bandhavgarh National Park after it crept under a tourist vehicle whose driver panicked on seeing the tiger and ran over it. The incident happened on April 21 and the tiger was found dead three days later with injuries on the ribs and lungs. The driver of the vehicle has been arrested and has been booked for poaching!

Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve Field Director Aseem Shrivastava told HT that on April 21, 3 tourist MUVs were having a tour in the Tala Range. The tiger walked up to one of the MUVs and sat underneath it.

The driver, Satyendra Tiwari, who also owns a lodge at Bandhavgarh, panicked and sped the vehicle away, injuring the tiger. Confirming the incident, Additional PCCF Wildlife T.R. Sharma said that the cub was aged about 6 months and was killed due to negligence of the gypsy driver.

Subsequently, the forest department booked Tiwari on charges of poaching, arrested him and produced him in court. Tiwari is in judicial custody.

Shrivastava said that besides a case being registered, an inquiry into the incident has also been ordered. Shrivastava accepted that the incident sounds incredulous, but claimed that all aspects would be looked into in the probe.

He added that an SDO of the forest department was at the spot when the incident occured and has corroborated the sequence of events.
