After Udta Punjab, Great Grand Masti leaked online before its release

Director Indra Kumar’s upcoming film, Great Grand Masti, has been leaked online three weeks before the release of the film in theatres.

Great Grand Masti, the third part of the Masti sex-comedy franchise — scheduled for release on July 22 — was leaked online on Monday. The complete film of two hours and 14 minutes in a high-definition print along with full credit titles can be seen online.

This is the second big Bollywood film in a month after Abhishek Choubey’s Udta Punjab to be leaked online, with a watermark ‘censor’. Something that Pahlaj Nihalani, the chairman of Central Board of Film Certification in India, sees as an attempt to malign the censor board.

While the reactions of the producers and directors who were caught unawares by the setback, ranged from “Too shocked to reply” to “Let me get back to you”, the damage to Great Grand Masti’s prospects at the box office are serious and grievous.

A leading trade analyst, who didn’t want to be named, says: “The damage to this film would be far greater than Udta Punjab, as the latter was leaked just a day or two before release, whereas Great Grand Masti is available online a good three weeks before its scheduled date of release. Furthermore, the audience for the sex comedy is the young post-pubescent males who are online all day long. Chances are, Great Grand Masti has lost a sizable chunk of its audience due to the online leak.”
