Hindustan Times

Hours before the film releases and a day before the reviews appear, here’s what you can expect from this week’s release…

Film: Jolly LLB

: Arshad Warsi (last seen in Zilla Ghaziabad), Boman Irani (last seen in Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi; 2012), Amrita Rao (last seen in Love U...Mr. Kalakaar!; 2011) and Saurabh Shukla (last seen in Barfi! 2012)

: A small-time fumbling lawyer dreams of making it big in the league, until he finds himself pitched against one of the most experienced lawyers around in a case that he decides to go all out for.

Subhash Kapoor (Last directed Phas Gaye Re Obama in 2010)
The Rajat Kapoor and Neha Dhupia starrer was an unexpected hit and received good reviews from critics.

The soundtrack has failed to make a mark on the charts. It has not received very encouraging reviews from critics either.

Funnily enough, the film that revolves around lawyers has received about three legal notices. While one claimed that the film is defamatory and “the lawyers from the Meerut law college have been portrayed in a bad light,” another is apparently from someone called Manjit Singh Jolly, who claims he is being made fun of due to the film. The court,
however, has not stalled the release of the film.

Boman Irani and Arshad Warsi, both of whom play lawyers in the film, recently judged a debate at a city

Our assessment
Those who’ve wondered whether Arshad Warsi aka Circuit from Munna Bhai could do with his own film may be the happiest with this movie. However, the sight of a very out-of-place Amrita Rao makes this film look dated.

Dude, where’s his car?

Film: Mere Dad Ki Maruti

Cast: Saqib Saleem (last seen in Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge; 2011), Rhea Chakraborty (Bollywood debut) and Ram Kapoor (last seen in Mai)
plot: When an angry old Punjabi father’s (Ram Kapoor) mischievous young son loses his car, all hell breaks loose. The son, along with his trusted friend, venture out to try and repair the damage.

Ashima Chibber (Directorial debut) She last worked as a chief assistant director on the 2006 film, Pyaar Ke Side Effects and has already been signed to direct two more films for Yash Raj Films.

Sachin Gupta
Rapper Honey Singh was roped in for a song titled ‘Punjabiyan di battery’. The song has been promoted in a big manner, but the rest of the soundtrack remains under the radar.

The only controversial angle has been the mention of Honey Singh. This film, for a change, has made no news for any drama.

A second soundtrack for the film was recently released. It comprises only the background score of the movie. Produced by Y Films, the youth wing of Yash Raj Films, the film is being promoted keeping young viewers in mind.

Our assessment
The promo is a series of jokes strung together with a severely Punjabi backdrop. It might not give Salman Khan’s Dabangg box-office records a run for its money, but it might attract its fair share of upper stallers.
