For years it used to be the gym. That’s where you could find Bollywood stars after a hard day’s work. Some of them, like Salman Khan, even took their personal gyms wherever they went. The ‘gym look’ became a thing. But as the years have gone by, new recreational fitness activities have taken over from plain old cardio. Stars are now doing Pilates, they’re learning martial arts such as Krav Maga, and they’re also doing yoga.

Before International Yoga Day on Thursday, here’s looking at the impact yoga has had on the lives of Bollywood’s biggest stars. We also have pictures, physics-defying videos and words of wisdom.

Shilpa Shetty

“Courage is attempting what you are scared of...Doing yoga for 15 years now and I have no shame in admitting that I was “scared” to attempt the Sirsaasana,” wrote Shilpa alongside a video. She is probably Bollywood’s biggest proponent of yoga - she has even released her yoga videos.

Alia Bhatt

Alia practices a subset of yoga called anti-gravity yoga. The actor has shared several pictures and videos of herself practising yoga, and has said that she works out even on holidays.

Malaika Arora

The 44-year-old celeb shared a series of videos leading up to International Yoga Day, inviting her fans to “Inhale. Exhale. And immerse yourself in a world of well-being.” She advised them to ‘remain present’ through ‘conscious breathing’ and ‘controlled movements’.

Bipasha Basu

“Yoga takes you into the present moment, the only place where life exists,” Bipasha wrote on International Yoga Day, 2016.

Kareena Kapoor Khan

Kareena famously lost a lot of weight post giving birth to her son, Taimur. She credited the quick weight loss to a mix of Pilates, yoga and other workouts. “Bebo knows her body so well, so we knew exactly what works for her. We did a lot of Fly Fit—it’s the baby I’ve created, a mix of aerial yoga and Pilates,” her yoga instructor, Anshuka Parwani told Vogue.

Jacqueline Fernandez

Jacqueline calls herself a yogini and practises another kind of yoga, called pole yoga. She shared a picture of herself mid-pose, which became a popular meme.
