Gear up for the unseen: Bollywood running high on unconventional pairings
As Irrfan Khan teams up with Sushant Singh Rajput, we look at why uncommon pairings have become big in Bollywood.Updated: Oct 19, 2016 08:47 IST
Last year, the idea of Irrfan Khan working with Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan in Piku created a lot of positive buzz around the film. The same goes for Kick (2014), which saw Salman Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui team up for the first time. Arjun Kapoor and Manoj Bajpayee coming together for Tevar (2015) also got a similar response from the audience.
Now, a number of new unusual partnerships are set to be seen on the big screen. Tiger Shroff and Nawazuddin will act alongside each other in Sabbir Khan’s Munna Michael. Also, Sidharth Malhotra will star with Suniel Shetty in directors Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK’s (Raj-DK) untitled next. Likewise, Sushant Singh Rajput and Irrfan Khan will soon start shooting for Homi Adajania’s Takadum, which also stars Parineeti Chopra.
“In my opinion, Irrfan is the best actor we have today, and I am a big fan. I am excited, as I will get an opportunity to work with him, and I will get to learn so much. I am also nervous because I know there will be times when I’ll be completely in awe of him, and I might just sc**w up the take,” says Sushant with a laugh.
The surprise factor
Other unusual pairs to hit the silver screen include Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan (in director Gauri Shinde’s Dear Zindagi), Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan (in director Vijay Krishna Acharya’s Thugs of Hindostan), besides the rumoured casting of Ajay Devgn and Shraddha Kapoor in Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal 4.
Interestingly, Alia admits that she was aware of talks around her “unusual” casting with Shah Rukh. “Even when the announcement was made, many people were like, “What the hell?” or “How is this possible?” or “This is damn weird.” But I don’t want to say anything. I will let the trailers and the film do the talking. So, let’s wait for that,” says Alia, adding that after having shot for the film with SRK, she has “definitely become a bigger admirer of him.”
Experts strongly believe that the “novelty and surprise factor” work in favour of such castings. “When you have a new or an unconventional casting, it definitely increases people’s curiosity, simply due to the fact that they haven’t seen those two actors working together. But such castings have to be done smartly, so that it doesn’t look forced,” says trade analyst Komal Nahta, adding that “unconventional castings have a proven track record at the box office too”.
Aamir is equally kicked about working with Bachchan. He wrote on his Twitter account, “Finally, the moment I’ve been waiting for has come... to work with my icon, Mr. Bachchan! Thanks Adi (Aditya Chopra), Victor, for Thugs of Hindostan. I’m too thrilled to be working with the actor I have admired all of my life (sic).”
On the other hand, Bachchan has revealed that there “have been many attempts (by makers) for us to be working together”. “I look forward to this opportunity (in Thugs of Hindostan). Aamir is a great star and a great actor. He is ruling the box office today and has been for many years. I feel fortunate to be working with him,” says Bachchan.
