Vikram Bhatt is known for transcending his identity from being a Bhatt protégé to becoming a filmmaker who has carved his own identity in the film industry.
Besides having several projects under his production banner currently, Vikram is also devising a launch pad for actors from the small screen. His upcoming film, Horror Story, will feature TV actors Karan Kundra and Nishant Malkani.
The filmmaker has also signed Jay Bhanushali and Vishal Karwal for other projects. In a candid chat, Vikram talks about this endeavour, his upcoming ventures, and his fascination with horror films.
Since you’ve cast several actors from TV in your films, do you see yourself as the godfather to them?
Not really. TV actors are a good bet as they are stars in their own right. Having done serials, they aren’t new anymore. So, you don’t have to teach them how to act. They are well-versed with their job and the basics of working on a set.
You seem to be following your mentor Mahesh Bhatt’s formula of making low-budget films and turning new faces into big stars.
I don’t know about making anyone a star because right now, I am concentrating on becoming a star myself. I’m not following any formula. I’m just trying hard and unashamedly chasing my own stardom. The pattern of filmmaking has changed today. While I’m directing a film, I’m also producing some others.
How’s your equation with the Bhatts?
The personal relationship we share supersedes any work I do with them. Mahesh Bhatt is my mentor and guru. I’ve taken his invaluable advice for Creature that features Bipasha (Basu). I am also directing his next that stars Emraan Hashmi.
After the initial days of your career, you ventured into horror films that have now become your identification tag. What’s your fascination with the genre?
It’s lucrative. I like to peddle fear. Since it worked, I decided to do it in a big way and not just in one or two films. I do get many directors and writers approaching me with horror scripts now. While I’m doing other films as well, horror will remain the core component of my production company.
What is it about Bipasha that makes you cast her frequently?
All directors work with their favourite actors and Bipasha is my favourite. She’s professional and hard-working. She is a good actor and trusts my ideas. She’s as game for adventure just as I am.
Do you regret that your love life was talked about more than your work? Are you considering getting married?
No, I don’t regret that. I can’t stop people from writing or talking. While marriage is a no-no for me, I’m single and am afraid to mingle as of now.
