After winning acclaim for his latest release, Madras Cafe, Shoojit Sircar has moved on to his next project. He will be producing a Bengali film. The script has been locked and it is set to go on the floors soon.

The filmmaker is also planning to remake some Bengali classics in Hindi, but he rubbishes rumours that Satyajit Ray’s sleuth film, Sonar Kella (1974), is presently among them. “Ray’s film is on my wish list, but not now. There are some films that only Bengalis have seen; no one has seen such simple yet intriguing and beautiful films at the national level,” he says.

The film will also mark the directorial debut of singer-actor Anindya Chatterjee from the Bengali band, Chandrabindoo. Shoojit says, “He (Anindya) has written a lovely script. I am quite charged about it. I will actively be involved with the film.”

Titled Bondhu Byline, the film will go on the floors in October, just after Durga Puja. About this film, Shoojit says, “We’re going to make it with fresh actors. It’s set completely around north Kolkata.”

Shoojit intends to stay in Kolkata for a while before thinking about his next directorial venture. Ask him about it and he says, “I will definitely direct a Bengali film, but now it’s too early to take a call. I will write and direct the film; it will be announced soon."
