Directors Karan Johar, Dibakar Banerjee and Zoya Akhtar spoke about issues, ranging from political censorship to lack of creative freedom, that plague filmmakers, during a panel discussion in the Capital, that was held as part of celebrating 100 years of Indian Cinema. The trio also turned down allegations from the audience that Bollywood is responsible for promoting and glorifying violence against women. While Zoya had a curt response to the question, as she asked, “Don’t you go and watch an item number?” Dibakar, in his light-mannered way just urged everyone to look within.

On censorship
I was promised democracy but I never got it as a filmmaker. I feel restricted in this land. My Name is Khan was banned in my state

A scene in Love Sex Aur Dhoka where a boy is butchered because he is from a low cast was removed due to political intervention

Once they (CBFC) are done with their verdict, no political party or house wife should be offended (with the content)

On bollywood’s role
I am afraid to give a statement on the politics of land or even share my point-of-view. I feel restrictive to be a citizen of this country
Karan Johar

Please do not blame films alone. Please be morally conscious from inside first and then raise fingers
Dibakar Banerjee

If all the women wear sari in films, will it change the society? You have the right to not buy the ticket. People went to watch Chikni Chameli.
