Even though he regularly caught up on movies at the Toronto International Film Festival, camera operator Brent Robinson had never imagined that he’d shoot a Hindi movie some day. Well, he has filmed Vikram Bhatt’s 3D horror flick Haunted with Mimoh Chakraborty in the lead.
Robinson, a specialist in 3D and underwater shooting, has worked in films like Orphan, The Incredible Hulk, Cheaper By The Dozen, Gothika and the recently released Resident Evil 4: After Life. He was in British Columbia for a BMW commercial when his agent was contacted by representatives from Prasad Labs. “I did a little background checking and learnt that Prasad is a big company in India,” he reminisces.
Even though Robinson didn’t get much time to familiarise himself after landing in India, Bhatt gave him full creative freedom. He’s all praise for Bhatt’s cinematographer-father, Pravin Bhatt. “Pravin uncle was a big help,” he says. “Vikram, Pravin and the team were like family, I’ll miss them. But I haven’t seen my own family back in Toronto in four months. I’m eager to see my wife and two children. I’ve bought a couple of wood carvings for the kids that they hopefully can’t break and a sari for my wife.”
Robinson has even shot a video of how the sari should be draped for his wife. “The salesgirl showed it to me, but I wasn’t sure I would remember her instructions. So I asked a girl in the costume department to drape it and recorded the princess,” he laughs.
He also checked out Resident Evil 4 at a suburban multiplex and was disappointed by the viewing experience. “The theatre was too dark and the 3D glasses I got didn’t work. I got them changed, but all I saw were blurred images. Hope it’s better back home,” he sighs.
Robinson will be back to work on the post-production of Haunted and might be there at the premiere too. “I’d love to return to my wife and children. It would be great to see the film with them in India,” he says, adding that he’d enjoy working with Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shekhar Kapur whose Elizabeth impressed him immensely. Robinson adds, “I’d also love to shoot a song-and-dance musical with my wife on board. She is a trained choreographer.”
