One of the biggest hits of last year, the Rohit Shetty-directed Ajay Devgn starrer Singham is set to have a sequel. The filmmakers plan to begin shooting this year.
The movie, which was a remake of the Tamil film Singam (in 2010, starring Suriya), is touted to be different from the typical over-the-top south action film.
So it seems that the film will still have all the action and
that made the first part successful, but this time around, the script isn’t taken from another south film, says an insider. “The script for the sequel is still being written. This time, it will be completely fresh,” says the insider, adding, “Since Singham was such a huge hit, there are a lot of expectations from the sequel. It has got to have all the elements the first one had.”
Coincidentally, the script for part two of the Tamil film is ready, and the Tamil and the Hindi sequels are expected to be shot around the same time.
Ask director Rohit Shetty about the story for his film and he agrees that the script is original. Without revealing much, though, Rohit just says, “Yes, the script is completely new. We didn’t want to do another remake.”
Also, while the entire cast might not be retained from the first part, Ajay Devgn will definitely continue to play Bajirao Singham.
While this sequel should take off by mid-2013, after Chennai Express wraps up, Rohit adds that he’s open to considering a Bol Bachchan sequel too. “That’s provided we get an original idea that works. I’ve had enough of South and old Bollywood remakes,” he admits.
