Super 30 actor Pankaj Tripathi: It’s surprising that my fan base has increased all of a sudden

Actor Pankaj Tripathi, whose popularity shot up after hit films such as Bareilly Ki Barfi, Newton, and Fukrey Returns (2017), is happy with this purple patch in his career. “It’s really surprising that my fan base has increased so suddenly. People say they are my fans, and most of them exclaim when they meet me, ‘You surprised us in the film!’. They add that they expect to be surprised every time they go into the theatre,” says Pankaj.
“For Bareilly Ki Barfi (which also starred Rajkummar Rao, Kriti Sanon, and Ayushmann Khurrana), I was told that I didn’t just play the role of Narottam Mishra, the father of Kriti’s character, but lived him. Same was said for me playing Pandit in Fukrey Returns,” says the actor, who will next be seen playing the antagonist in the film Super 30, locking horns with Hrithik Roshan. He will also play the role of a policeman in Rajinikanth-starrer Kaala.
Asked which roles he enjoys the most — positive or negative, Pankaj says, “I like playing positive roles more. I want that people should smile or laugh when they see me on screen. Itna stressful mahaul chal raha hai poori duniya mein. Har insaan ke maathe pe tension hai... education ki, career ki (The world has become so stressful. Everyone is worried about either education or career). I believe that if a person is spending ₹300 to come to the theatre, he/she should get entertained. Par mera maqsad hai ki healthy entertainment karoon, kuch bakwaas nahi (But my intention is to provide healthy entertainment and not any nonsense.)”
