Varun Dhawan’s Judwaa 2 rules box office, makes Rs 59.25cr in 3 days to emerge 2017’s third biggest opener

Varun Dhawan continued his dream run at the box office on Sunday, with Judwaa 2 collecting a total of Rs 59.25 crore within three days of the release. The film, which also stars Jacqueline Fernandez and Taapsee Pannu, earned Rs 22.60 crore on Sunday and Rs 20.55 crore on Saturday.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “The audience verdict is loud and clear: #Judwaa2 hits the BULL’S EYE... Emerges one of the best openers of 2017... Directed by David Dhawan, Judwaa 2 is a remake of David’s 1997 hit starring Salman Khan, Judwaa. Varun stepped into the shoes of Salman while Jacqueline and Taapsee played Karisma Kapoor and Rambha’s roles respectively. Rajpal Yadav essayed the role of Nandu, played by Shakti Kapoor in the original.
Varun Dhawan managed to cross the weekend collection of previous hit, Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya. The film that starred Alia Bhatt opposite Varun, collected Rs 41.88 crore over the first weekend.
With the latest figures, Judwaa 2 has made it to the top five weekend openers of 2017 in Bollywood. While Prabhas’s Baahubali takes the top slot with a weekend collection of Rs 127 crore in India alone, it was technically a Telugu film. Among Bollywood movies, Salman Khan’s Tubelight made Rs 69.45 crore in three days while Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees stands second with Rs 59.48 crore.
Varun Dhawan’s film has done better than Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Harry Met Sejal (Rs 45.75 crore) and Akshay Kumar’s Toilet Ek Prem Katha (Rs 51.45 crore). He also broke the record made by his last 2017 release, Badrinath Ki Dulhania, which made Rs 43.05 crore in three days.
