Airtel will offer customers a unique SIM adaptor (2 adaptors) which provides customers the freedom of switching between nano-, micro- and mini-SIM compatible devices.

“The SIM runs best with smartphones, tablets, phablets, dongles and connected cameras,” a senior executive in Bharti Airtel said.

At present, more and more customers are moving from feature phones to smartphones, which also means a shift from a mini-SIM to a micro- or nano-SIM. With Airtel’s smart-SIM a customer can seamlessly shift between devices offering 2G, 3G or 4G connections. Smart SIM will also have more storage space compared to the present SIM cards, which means one can store more contacts.

Other operators such as Vodafone, RCom and Aircel too are exploring issue of similar smart-SIMs. The smart SIM has been designed keeping in mind the unique needs of data centric customers who use a smartphone or a tablet.
