The government on Thursday accepted a long-pending demand of workers that second and fourth Saturdays be declared holidays.
“The central government hereby declares the second and the fourth Saturday of every month as public holiday for banks in India, whether or not such banks are included in the Second Schedule,” a spokesperson said.
This will be implemented beginning September 1.
At present, all PSU and private sector banks work half-day on Saturdays. In case a month has five Saturdays, banks will be closed only on second and fourth Saturdays.
