With an eye on increasing India’s share in global shipbuilding to 5% from the present 1%, the ministry of shipping on Thursday released its Maritime Agenda 2010-2020 that envisages a 3,200-metric tonne (MT) port capacity to handle about 2,500 MT of cargo over the decade.

Creating a modern safety and security measures, an automatic identification system, an independent marine casualty investigation cell and an ombudsman are on the agenda.
“We’re working towards a legal framework, so that claim compensation could be paid in case of ship wrecks or oil spills,” shipping minister GK Vasan said.
“We are promoting lighthouses as potential tourist spots, and cruise shipping, and ferry services to neighbouring countries,” said shipping secretary K Mohandas.
