SC interim stay on Sterlite closure

The Supreme Court on Friday granted an interim relief to Anil Agarwal-led Sterlite Industries by staying the implementation of the Madras High Court order directing the closure of company’s copper smelting plant in Tuticorn, Tamil Nadu. HT reports.

The Supreme Court on Friday granted an interim relief to Anil Agarwal-led Sterlite Industries by staying the implementation of the Madras High Court order directing the closure of company’s copper smelting plant in Tuticorn, Tamil Nadu. The stay would be till October 18, the next date of hearing.

Sterlite had moved the apex court against the HC verdict ordering closure of its unit for not complying with environmental norms. The HC had said that the plant was within 25 km of an ecological fragile area and the company had failed to develop a green belt of 250 metre width around the plant.
