1-year jail to Jalandhar couple for dual vote

The court of judicial magistrate (1st class) Harpreet Singh on Tuesday awarded one-year jail to a couple, residents of Adda Hoshiarpur, for having made dual votes. The Navi Baradari police had booked Ashok Kumar and wife Shashi under Sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 31 of the Representation of the People Act on a complaint from Vikas Bhardwaj, a resident of Laxmipura locality, on May 7, 2011.

The Navi Baradari police had booked Ashok Kumar and wife Shashi under Sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 31 of the Representation of the People Act on a complaint from Vikas Bhardwaj, a resident of Laxmipura locality, on May 7, 2011.

The complaint had alleged that even as the couple resided at Laxmipura and were registered as voters, they continued to be on the voter-list from Adda Hoshiarpur as well. Based on the complaint, ACP (special branch) conducted had conducted an inquiry and registered a first-information report.

The complainant’s counsel Arvind Sharda told reporters that the couple had been sentenced to one-year jail under Section 420 and three-month imprisonment under Section 31 of Representation of the People Act. However, they would serve one year as both sentences ran concurrently, he added.
