Head constable Hem Raj and constable Ram Murti have been suspended for dereliction of duty after two rape accused escaped from the police station, taking advantage of the sudden dark after a power cut struck around 10pm on Friday.

It is said that the accused were not behind bars per se, but sitting in a room, as the police station lacks a lock-up. According to the complainant, head constable Hari Om, when he reached the police station to resume his duty around 6pm on Saturday, he discovered that the two alleged rapists, Bhupinder Singh and Kamaldeep, who had in fact been arrested on Friday itself, had gone missing. They worked as conductors for a private bus service.

According to DSP Darshan Singh Mann, the officials on duty have been booked under sections 223 and 224 of the IPC and automatically placed under suspension.
