27 PU students booked for campus defacement

Acting on a complaint lodged by the Panjab University administration, the police filed a case against 27 students for defacing campus property and booked leaders of nine student groups.

DSP (central) Ashish Kapoor said: “Students identified by the university of having been involved in the violations have been booked, but are yet to be arrested.” Earlier, PU officials had recorded over 50 instances of defacement of campus property by students and had sent a communication, including photos of suspects, to the police.

The varsity administration found almost all groups including the National Students Union of India (NSUI), Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Student Organization of India (SOI) and Student Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) involved in the violations. PU’s swift action had come in the wake of a contempt of court petition filed in the Punjab & Haryana HC, where the varsity had to submit a report. The case is listed on August 25 .

THOSE BOOKED

Candidates of ABVP, NSUI, SOPU, SOI, NSO, HSA, HPSU, GGSU and PUSU. The largest number of notices issued by PU were to SOI (nine), followed by five each to NSUI and PUSU. SOPU was issued four notices. Meet Jatana, Amarinder Mann have been booked. The presidents of parties found indulging in defacement have been booked. A case has been registered under Defacement of Property West Bengal Act, 1976, against Ripin, Tahil, Sukhdeep, Robin Brar and others.
