The matter came to light on Wednesday, when the parents of the victim approached the police with a complaint, on the insistence of neighbours.
Police said the accused, Dharminder of New Janta Nagar, was a vegetable vendor, and lived in the same neighbourhood as the victim, daughter of his paternal uncle.
The victim’s father told the police that on October 4, his daughter was playing outside the house, when Dharminder took her to his rented accommodation and raped her. Hearing screams of the girl, locals huddled there, prompting the accused to flee the scene.
Inspector Parmod Kumar, station house officer (SHO), Shimlapuri police station, said as fathers of the girl and Dharminder were brothers, they did not approach the police.
But area residents, who caught the accused red-handed, urged the girl’s father to lodge a complaint.
The SHO said the accused may have fled to his native in Uttar Pradesh.
A case under Sections 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 4 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered against the accused. Hunt is on to arrest him.
