Bajwa asks PM to include dhobi-kanaujia in SC list

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Partap Singh Bajwa has requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to include the dhobi-kanaujia community of Punjab in the Scheduled Castes list to fulfil a long-pending demand.

In a communication to the Prime Minister on Friday, Bajwa said a number of representations were made from various groups of the community in the state for their inclusion in the SC list. "There is a sizeable population of this community in Punjab," he added.

Bajwa said the parameter adopted for declaring a community as SC is "extreme social educational and economic backwardness, arising out of traditional practice of untouchability, and the dhobi/kanaujia is one such community".
