The Chamar Mahan Sabha on Thursday charged the Parkash Singh Badal-led regime with having diverted funds meant for welfare of the Scheduled Castes (SCs) towards other works.
"The SC sub-plan of the 11th Five Year Plan worth Rs 4,088 crore from 2007-12 has not been spent, even though according to the planning commission the money allocated to this sub-plan cannot be diverted or allowed to lapse. The Akali-BJP government has no account of where this money has gone," read a statement issued by Paramjit Singh Kainth, president of the sabha (organisation) that terms itself "an apolitical body fighting for the rights of the SCs".
He also noted that though Punjab has five municipal corporations, not a single mayor was from the SCs. "The SC community now feels that by voting for the SAD-BJP coalition we committed a grave blunder."
Accusing the state government of "blatantly ignoring" the fundamental rights of the SCs, Kainth said an awareness campaign on this issue had been launched by the sabha at the district level across Punjab. "The SC MLAs and MPs of the Akali-BJP combine are not working for the welfare of the SC community," he alleged further, "And even the Congress has failed to play its role as the opposition."
