In a drive to check sale of loose cigarettes, Tobacco Cell of UT Health Department on Tuesday raided some shops and found two shopkeepers selling loose cigarettes.
On May 21, the UT administration had imposed ban on sale of loose cigarettes under provisions of Section 7 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003. Section 7 prohibits any trade in cigarettes or other tobacco products unless every package include specified warning, including pictorial warning.
According to a UT Tobacco Cell press release, the team led by Dr Deepak Bakshi, state nodal officer, National Tobacco Control Program, Chandigarh along with the sub-inspector of the area first raided booth no 48 C, Sector 20-C and found loose cigarettes being sold.. Later in the day, the team found loose cigarettes being sold in Ram Darbar and Karsan at four different shops and seized the loose cigarettes.
At Ram Darbar, the team also found four shops/rehris selling tobacco products within the 100 yards of the government school and challaned them under Section 6 of COTPA. The Nodal officer also met the head of the school regarding the same.
