Cigarettes are all set to get expensive in the city with the UT administration increasing the value added tax (VAT) on sale of cigarettes from 12.5% to 20%. Deputy commissioner Mohammed Shayin said the hike in VAT would be enforced as soon as it was notified. He said the hike in VAT could serve as a deterrent against chain smoking, and also increase revenue. VAT on cigarettes is 20.5% in Punjab, while Haryana charge 20%. Himachal Pardesh and Delhi impose 36% and 20% VAT, respectively.
