In a suspected case of honour killing, a young couple was cremated secretly by their respective families here early morning on Wednesday. Victims have been identified as Manoj and Kiran (both in their twenties). They belonged to marginal Ahir families of the same village.
Following an alert by some residents of the village about the twin cremations done in a hurried manner, the police swung into action and raided the village, located about 20 km from Karnal.
Though Manoj got married about an year ago, but his wife was yet to join her in-laws family in the village. Kiran had completed her matriculation last year and was still unmarried.
Sources in the police said that as per preliminary investigations, the two were in a relationship, which their families didn’t approve of.
In absence of any independent complainant, inspector of Taraori police station, under whose jurisdiction Bhaini Kalan falls, filed a complaint against five people including fathers of the victims and three brothers of Manoj.
As the bodies had been cremated before the arrival of the police, sources said that the cops were relying upon the scientific investigations in the case.
“Forensic experts have taken samples from pyres and raided the houses of the accused for clues.
Role of another villager is under scanner whose car was allegedly used in the crime,” said a police source.
Meanwhile, superintendent of police Abhishek Garg told HT that the accused, including Manoj’s father Jawala Singh, his sons Rajesh, Sandeep and Dharambir and Kiran’s father Randhir Singh, had conspired to kill the couple.
“Circumstantial evidence strongly suggest that the couple was done to death by members of the both the families.
They have been booked under sections 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence (read bodies) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code,” said the SP.
He said that it was a matter of investigation how and under what circumstances the couple was killed.
Manoj’s father Jawala Singh claimed that his son developed severe stomachache in the night and died of the natural reasons.
“I do not know how Kiran died but incidentally their bodies were cremated simultaneously,” he told reporters at the village while pleading innocence in the case.
The bodies were cremated at the village crematorium located on the main entrance point of the village.
Deputy superintendent of police Baljinder Singh, who is investigating the case, said that it had also come to the notice that the couple had eloped from the village.
“After they eloped, Manoj and Kiran were tracked to a Kurukshetra hotel and were brought back by their families on Tuesday night.
Later, both were allegedly killed but it was a matter of investigation how, where and by whom they were killed,” said the DSP.
