Gill's counsel Gurvinder Singh said the Punjab government had misused its power to remove the security personnel. In the petition, Gill has mentioned that Patti falls in Tarn Taran district that borders Pakistan and is known to be a region where miscreants and drug peddlers are roaming scot-free, and hence there is a danger to the his life as he is "an extremely popular social leader".

He also cited some past incidents where leaders were gunned down in the same district allegedly owing to political vendetta.
