In 2009, seven seats from the region were won by the Congress, which formed government in Haryana then. Three were won by Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) candidates, and the Gurgaon seat was won by Independent Sukhbir Kataria, who later joined the grand old party.
BJP state president Ram Bilas Sharma, who was lauded for the party’s spectacular show in the Lok Sabha polls where it won seven out of 10 parliamentary seats, was projected as the chief minister. But, he has been sidelined.
At that time the party was in alliance with Haryana Janhit Congress.
Starting from then BJP national president Rajnath Singh to Sushma Swaraj, saffron party leaders had projected Sharma as the CM candidate, if the party came to power.
In the recently-concluded assembly polls, Sharma trounced nemesis Rao Daan Singh from the Mahendergarh seat.
Another frontrunner for the post was Rao Inderjit Singh, a prominent Ahir leader and icon of dynasty politics in Ahirland who quit the grand old party to join the BJP in January.
He had extensively campaigned in all constituencies in Ahirland except Mahendergarh, from where Sharma contested.
Sources said BJP’s CM choice has not faced any opposition from the region, but it certainly was a setback for Rao Inderjit Singh and Ram Bilas Sharma supporters, who were anticipating a 'Chaudhar' from south Haryana.
