Ludhiana judoka bags bronze in Commonwealth championship
Narang said that she started getting judo training from Ludhiana academy at Multipurpose Hall of Guru Nanak Stadium in 2017
Adding the first international medal to her kitty, 13-year-old Judoka, Ishroop Narang returned to the city with a bronze medal from Commonwealth Championship held at Birmingham, United Kingdom, from September 24 to 30.
Narang participated in Under-14, +70kg weight category and secured the third position in the championship.
On Tuesday, sportspersons from the city gave a warm welcome to the judoka and her coach Parveen Thakur, who was selected as the coach for Indian pre-cadet judo team for this championship.
While sharing her success story, Narang said that she started getting judo training from Ludhiana academy at Multipurpose Hall of Guru Nanak Stadium in 2017 with a motive to lose weight but after she won her first medal (gold) in the district championship held in September 2017, she slowly developed interest in the game.
“I have also played basketball and shot put but couldn’t develop interest in these games,” she said. She also shared another reason behind getting into sports. “Since my childhood I had interest in outdoor games but my friends used to get occupied in indoor activities. So, I told my mother to get me admission in some sports academy,” the 13-year-old says.
Narang said she wants to continue her winning streak and to achieve this target, she has joined one of the best judo academies in Karnataka. ”Now I practice there but I always represent Ludhiana during the competitions because I belong to this city and have learned basics from here,” she said.
She added that she practices for one-and-a-half hours in the morning and two hours in the evening.
Daughter of a businessman, Tejinderpal Singh, who runs a hosiery business, Ishroop Narang, she says her parents have always been supportive.
COACH PRODUCED OVER 20 PLAYERS
Coach Parveen Thakur has produced over 20 international players, including Vishal Acharya, who recently bagged gold in the Asia Pacific Games held in Russia earlier this month. Judoka Priya who represented India in World University Games ‘2019 Summer Universiade held at Italy and Judoka Prince, who won gold medal in commonwealth championship last year, are also trainees of Thakur.
