Additional district and sessions judge Paramjeet Singh on Friday awarded three-year jail to a Mauli Jagran resident Jaspal Singh for injuring a cop on duty. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1,500 on him.

The UT police had arrested two brothers of Mauli Jagran for hitting the cop at a checkpoint near the housing board lightpoint on March 2 last year. Jaspal’s brother Suman was also sitting with him in the car when the cop was hit, but he was later discharged of the charges by the court.
The case was registered on the complaint of UT police sub-inspector Krishan Kumar, who stated that the police had received information about liquor being supplied to the city in wake of Lok Sabha elections.
“A car, which was driven by Jaspal Singh, was signaled to stop during a naka at Manimajra, but the driver accelerated the vehicle. As a result, SI Krishan Kumar was hit. He sustained minor injuries and was rushed to a hospital. The police said the checkpoint was set up after a tip-off.
