Riding a motorcycle for fun proved fatal for a 16-year-old Manimajra boy, who was killed in an accident near the Nada Sahib gurdwara on the Panchkula-Barwala road near here on Friday.
Rahul Garcha, 16, a student of Class 10, accompanied by his classmate Ritu, a resident of Sector 7 here, was going towards Ramgarh on the motorcycle at about 1.30 pm. After crossing Nada Sahib, Rahul tried to overtake a truck and got hit by the truck in the process.
The motorcycle lost the balance and hit an auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite side. The impact was such that the auto-rickshaw overturned and the motorcycle also got thrown to one side of the road.
Rahul died on the spot. Ritu had to be taken to General Hospital, Sector 6, where she was referred to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh.
In the auto-rickshaw, one Harmandeep Kaur, her two year-old son Harshdeep and aunt Balbir Kaur were going to pay obeisance at the Nada Sahib gurdwara. They received injuries and had to be taken to General Hospital, Sector 6.
Rahul, who reportedly had a Honda Activa scooter, had exchanged it with the motorcycle belonging to his friend to take a ride. Both Rahul and Ritu are students of Shishu Niketan School, Sector 5, Mansa Devi Complex.
Rahul, who reportedly did not have a driving licence, is survived by his parents and a sister. His father Shankar Garcha works as a photojournalist with a local newspaper. Rahul had taken his Class 10 exams recently and was awaiting the result.
Meanwhile, in another accident on the Panchkula-Shimla highway, five students were injured as the auto-rickshaw carrying them overturned near Chandimandir on Friday morning. Yatin, Samridhi, Manisha, Pridhi and Komal, all residents of Rajipur village of Pinjore, were going to school at Sector 12-A in Panchkula. They are all Class-12 commerce students.
Suddenly, a cyclist came in front of the auto-rickshaw, as a result of which it lost balance and overturned. All the injured were admitted to General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula.
In yet another road accident, a 22-year-old man, a resident of Sector 15, Panchkula, who was riding a motorcycle, was hit by a truck near the HMT, Pinjore, on Friday.
At about 4.15 pm, Neeraj Mehra, and his mother Urmila were on their way to Pinjore. Near the HMT, a truck reportedly hit the motorcycle from behind. Urmila fell down but the truck reportedly dragged Neeraj for some distance. He was seriously injured and is battling for life at PGI. Urmila was admitted to General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula.
