Punjab governor and UT administrator Shivraj V Patil and Lieutenant General TS Gill, chief, Staff Western Command, laid wreaths on the memorial.

A two-minute silence, in memory of the martyrs, was also observed. The Chandigarh War Memorial is a citizens' initiative and consists of a central obelisk with around 11,000 names of martyrs etched on granite plaques since Indian independence.

The memorial was dedicated to the nation by former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on August 17, 2006.

A candle-lighting ceremony was also held in the evening. About 200 army personnel along with their families participated in the event.
