Congress-backed councillors are yet to decide on the candidate for mayor for the Panchkula Municipal Corporation.
Many councillors are in line for the mayor's seat, but no consensus has been reached as yet.
Sangat Singh Nanda (ward no 2), Lily Bawa (ward no 14) and Bhawna Gupta (ward no 10) are in the race for the mayor's post.
Five councillors met chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Saturday. These included Somnath (ward no 1), Sangat Singh Nanda, Krishanlal Lamba (ward no 5), Yogender, husband of councillor Seema Devi (from ward no. 6), and Prem Kumar, husband of councillor Kanta Devi (ward no 11).
Sources said they confided in Hooda that they would support the candidate chosen by him.
On the other hand, five councillors, who owe loyalty to Kumari Selja, met her in Karnal on Friday where she had come for a political meeting. These included Lily Bawa, Bhawna Gupta, Pawan Mittal, father-in-law of councillor Mamta Mittal (ward no 16), Surinder Singh (ward no 19) and Shamsher, husband of councillor Dalbir Kaur (from ward no 17).
“We thanked Selja for her support. We all told her that we would support the candidate she would choose for the mayor's seat,” said Bawa.
“Madam (Selja) told us to bring consensus on mayor candidate after discussions. We need to bring 11 councillors on our side,” said Gupta.
