Police arrested a 35-year-old woman Sunday night for allegedly shooting dead her husband the night before at their rented accommodation in Mohali’s Phase-3 area.
Seerat Kaur had allegedly shot dead her businessman husband Aikom Singh Dhillon(40) late Saturday night, stuffed his body in a suitcase, placed it in a car and disappeared after her plans of disposing it went awry. The couple had a strained relationship since their marriage 12 years ago. Aikom was the son of human rights activist Jaspal Singh Dhillon.
Seerat was arrested from an undisclosed location in SAS Nagar late Sunday night.
“She has confessed to the crime and says that she and the victim had a strained relationship,” said SAS Nagar SSP Kuldeep Chahal.
The couple had rented the house 15 days and was living with their two children, a 10-year-old son and six-year-old daughter.
Police say the couple’s landlord Satinder, who stays on the ground floor, did not hear anything.
He told the police that the family had shifted from Sector 40, Chandigarh, to his house.
Seerat is the niece of former Congress MLA from Sardulgarh Ajit Inder Singh Mofer. Mofer contested on a Congress ticket from the seat and lost in the recent assembly elections. Mofer had brought up Seerat after her father died when she was a child.
The police were informed about the incident by an auto-rickshaw driver whom Seerat had asked to help put the suitcase in the car’s boot. The driver told the police that that his fingers were stained with blood oozing out of the suitcase when he tried to haul it into the boot of the BMW car.
By the time the police arrived early Sunday morning, Seerat, her mother Jaswinder Kaur and brother Vinay Pratap Brar had fled leaving behind the car with the boot still open. The children were also left behind in the house.
“The suitcase was opened to reveal the body of Aikom Singh Dhillon. Preliminary investigation shows that a bullet from a 9mm pistol had pierced through the head. We searched the house of the couple and found the children, who are still in shock,” said Matuar SHO Baljinder Singh Pannu. The pistol allegedly used in the crime was recovered, he added.
The two children are now with their paternal grandparents.
“A case of murder has been registered against Seerat Kaur, her mother Jaswinder Kaur and brother Vinay Pratap Brar on a statement from the deceased’s brother Darshan Singh. The post-mortem will be conducted on Monday,” the SHO added.
Darshan told the police that the couple had strained relationship and had even lived separately for a while. On Saturday, Aikom had gone to meet his father who stays in Phase-6. He sounded upset, his father said.
