From this session, students of engineering institutes affiliated to Panjab University (PU) will have the option of branch-shifting.
The rules have been framed for University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology (UICET), University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology (CCET) and UIET PU Regional Centre, Hoshiarpur.
The allotment of new branch would be made on the basis of merit and in accordance with the order of preference specified by the student, subject to the availability of seat. There is a constraint that the inflow of students into a branch cannot increase the strength of a class beyond the normal sanctioned intake while the outflow of students from a branch cannot decrease its existing strength by more than 10%.
As per the rules framed, the option of branch shifting will be offered to students of UICET after first year (or at the end of second semester), while in UIET, CCET and Hoshiarpur regional centre, it will be made after the 1st semester.
Confirming the development, Prof Renu Vig, director, UIET, said, "In the first semester, we have same subjects for all branches so it will be implemented after the first semester here. From the second semester, we have branch specific subjects."
The branch shifting will be permissible within the institute only.
As per the minutes of meeting, such a change will be considered only once at the end of second semester at UICET and in UIET, CCET and PU's Hoshiarpur centre at the end of first semester. No application for the change of branch will be entertained during the subsequent academic years, the rules say.
For branch shifting only those students will be eligible who were admitted against normal seats (excluding NRI category students) and have successfully completed the first two semesters in UICET and first semester in other institutes with CGPA greater than 9 without any reappears.
The minutes of meeting say, "The application for the change of branch has to be submitted in the prescribed performa in the office of Chairman or director or principal by the date announced for this purpose. The application must clearly specify the branches to which change is sought, in order of preference. The preference given once cannot be changed at a later stage."
The merit list of students will be prepared on the basis of their CGPA of first year in UICET and of first semester in CCET, UICET and UIET's Hoshiarpur centre. In case of tie in the CGPA, the students who had a better JEE-Main rank, on the basis of which admission to BE programme was granted, would be placed higher in merit.
