Police constable shoots himself dead at Republic Day function near Punjab’s Ludhiana

The 44-year-old constable, Manjit Singh, was depressed because of some family problems, the police said.

A 44-year-old police constable posted with Ludhiana police (rural) shot himself dead with his AK-47 rifle during Republic Day function at a Government Senior Secondary School in Jagraon, 45 km from Ludhiana.

Manjit Singh shot self in the head and died at the spot.

Singh was deputed as gunman of the Jagraon city station house officer was reportedly suffering from depression, police added.

They said investigations were in progress. The body has been sent to a civil hospital for post-mortem, they said.

Ludhiana rural SSP Surjit Singh said the head constable was going through some personal problems at home. “As per preliminary investigation, there was property dispute in his family. He had also taken a loan to construct a new house and was finding it difficult to pay the loan instalments,” the SSP added.

Manjit was a native of Nakodar but was posted at Jagraon.
