The People’s Party of Punjab, at the Sanjha Morcha core committee meeting here on Thursday, resolved to defeat the Congress as well as the Akali-BJP combine in the Lok Sabha elections.
On the possibility of electoral adjustment with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), PPP’s Bhagwant Mann said: “Changay bandean nu rajniti vich auna chaheeda hai (good people should come into politics). “We (the PPP) are open to supporting any good candidate in the AAP.”
PPP president Manpreet Badal, who has, so far, not confirmed the speculation of his contesting from Bathinda with the Congress support, has flown to London without stating the consensus on seat sharing after Morcha’s meeting on Thursday.
The Sanjha Morcha, an amalgam of the PPP, Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM), and Surjit Singh Baranala-led Akali faction, was formed as a secular front at Manpreet’s initiative during the 2012 assembly elections.
Punjab CPM secretary Charan Singh Virdi refuted the news reports that the Morcha would be in the Lok Sabha contest just to defeat Harsimrat Kaur Badal in Bathinda. “We resolved to defeat the Congress as well as the Akali-BJP coalition,” said Virdi.
PPP’s Bhagwant Mann stated that the party would contest eight seats in the state, while the Left would go for the remaining five. On the prospects of Barnala’s SAD (Longowal), Mann said the leader’s son, Gaganjit Singh Barnala, would run from Sangrur on the PPP’s kite symbol.
Asked to react, Gaganjit said nothing was clear, so far.
