Various student bodies took out a protest rally from the Student Centre to the vice-chancellor’s office, where they sat on a dharna, and launched a signature campaign against the decision. Indian National Student Organisation (INSO), Hindustan Students’ Association (HSA), Students Federation of India (SFI) and Student Organisation of India (SOI) and Ambedkar Students’ Association (ASA) participated in the protest.

Students Federation of India president Prabhpreet Singh said the protest would continue until the university withdraws its decision. Student outfits have called all party meeting to plan their course of action.

Meanwhile, justifying the hike, authorities said that Panjab University’s fees are lower that other universities.

In a press statement, Panjab University’s dean student welfare Navdeep Goyal said the additional income accrued through the hike would be used in student welfare programmes, including enhanced allocation for economically weaker sections.

He also asked students to desist from participating in the protest.
