The petition of Private Selffinanced Dental and Medical Colleges Association came up for hearing before the court headed by justice GS Sandhawalia. The association seeks quashing of the decision by which the state government had declined its proposal on December 31 last year to conduct the entrance test for the courses in all medical and dental colleges as allowed by the Supreme Court in the “Priya Gupta versus the State of Chhattisgarh” case in May 2012.

The Supreme Court had given the private medical colleges the option to conduct own test, argued the petitioner’s advocate, Kumar Vishav Aggarwal.

On November 7 last year, the Punjab government had circulated an advertisement in newspapers about admission to the MBBS and BDS courses for the 2014 session. The state quota seats were to be given based on merit in the common entrance test (All India Pre-Medical/PreDental Entrance Test-2014) to be conducted on May 4 by the CBSE.

The petitioner has also challenged the state government notification dated December 19, 2013, for admission to the postgraduate (PG) course (dental) for the 2014 session. The notification authorised the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), Faridkot, to conduct the centralised counselling for the award of PG-course seats on the basis of merit in the All-India Post Graduate Dental Exam (AIPGDE)-2014.
