Speeding car claims cyclist’s life, govt school teacher held

A 42-year-old cyclist was killed and a rickshaw-puller injured after they were hit by a speeding car in Sector 23 on Wednesday. The police have arrested the car driver, Anu Khanna, a teacher at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19.

The deceased has been identified as Dalbir Singh, while the injured rickshaw puller is Amar Singh.

The deceased worked as a gardener at the B&R office of the public works department at Sector 39.

Eye witnesses claimed that the accused was driving the car rashly when she hit the cyclist near the Chandigarh Traffic Park, Sector 23, around 4 pm.

“The car was coming from Sector 16 when it hit the cyclist and then rammed into the rickshaw. The woman car driver did not escape the spot, and rushed the injured to a hospital,” said sub-inspector (SI) Deshraj Singh, incharge of Sector-22 police post.

The victims were rushed to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, where Dalbir was declared brought dead.
Amar is stated to be in a stable condition.

A case under section 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the accused, who was later bailed out.
