The first batch of nearly 300 students belonging to underprivileged sections of society in Jammu and Kashmir will soon join engineering colleges across the country under a special scholarship scheme.

Minister for Higher Education Abdul Gani Malik flagged off the batch of 299 students admitted under centrally-sponsored special scholarship scheme for Jammu and Kashmir to undergo various engineering courses to various parts of the country.

The selected students have secured more than 50% in higher secondary school examinations and whose parents' annual income is less than Rs4.50 lakh, an official spokesperson said here on Wednesday.

Malik, while congratulating them for bagging this opportunity, said the government was committed for upliftment of poor and downtrodden sections of the society.

"Every effort is being made to ameliorate the lot of underprivileged class," he added.
