Sugar mills owe Rs 250 cr to Punjab, Haryana farmers

Private sugar mills owe Rs 250 crore dues to sugarcane farmers in Punjab and Haryana. Six sugar mills of Punjab owed `200 crore, while one sugar mill of Haryana was yet to pay Rs 48 crore to farmers, the Punjab and Haryana high court was told on Wendesday.

Private sugar mills owe Rs 250 crore dues to sugarcane farmers in Punjab and Haryana. Six sugar mills of Punjab owed `200 crore, while one sugar mill of Haryana was yet to pay Rs 48 crore to farmers, the Punjab and Haryana high court was told on Wendesday.

The court was also told both states that cooperative sugar mills had cleared the dues. The Punjab government told the court that a decision had been taken to give soft loans to private sugar mills to clear cane growers' dues and a notification in this regard would be issued soon. The high court also directed the Haryana government to reconsider the soft loan request of a private mill, which was yet to clear farmers' dues.
