Mohammad Talib of hosts St Stephen’s School produced a fine performance to pocket men’s singles as well as junior boys’ singles titles on the concluding day of the Chandigarh State Carrom Tournament in Sector 45 on Tuesday.
In the men’s singles event, Talib thrashed arch-rival Mohammad Hassan in straight games 25-2, 25-5. In the semifinals played earlier in the day, it was the son-father affair in both the matches: While Talib had defeated his father Umeed Ali 25-0, 25-7, Hassan also beat his father Mazhar Khan 25-8, 22-7 in a lopsided contest.
In the junior boys’ event, Talib carried on his winning momentum to grab the top honour; he defeated Arish 14-10, 19-8 in an easy encounter. Talib also scored a white slam in the second game of the final match.
Earlier, in the semifinals, Talib had brought down Mihir Yadav 22-0, 15-8, while Arish had got the better of Paras Arora 16-7, 5-20, 19-5 in a closely-fought encounter.
In the corresponding girls’ final, Tuba Sehar won the top honour after defeating Priya Sharma 16-12, 16-19,
19-16 in a nerve-wracking final. In the semifinals, Tuba had beaten Nidhi Gupta 14-8, 13-12, while Priya had defeated Manu Gupta 5-21, 11-8, 16-10.
In the women’s singles final, Farheen outplayed her younger sister, Tuba, 24-11, 15-10 to claim the title. Earlier, Farheen had defeated Priya 15-16, 23-18, 18-10, while Tuba had downed Manu 19-5, 23-4, in their respective semifinal matches.
Malik Singh, former director of Haryana Cooperative Bank, was the chief guest on the occasion and gave the prizes to the winners. During the event, the Chandigarh Carrom Association also honoured Talib and Tuba for claiming first and second position in their respective categories in the Junior Nationals held in Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh) in January this year. The junior and sub-junior girls’ teams were also felicitated for securing second and third positions in the National Championships 2013-14.
