Three more districts tobacco smoke-free in Punjab
The Punjab government on Friday formally declared Nawanshahr, Gurdaspur and Fatehgarh Sahib districts as tobacco smoke-free, raising the number of such districts to seven in the state.
A decision to this effect was taken by health minister Madan Mohan Mittal on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day on Friday, a spokesman said here.
The other districts already declared tobacco smoke-free are SAS Nagar, Mansa, Rupnagar and Amritsar.
The School of Public Health, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, was entrusted with the task of conducting a compliance survey and opinion poll to verify the compliance of the Cigarettes & Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, in these districts, following which the decision was taken, the spokesman said.
The minister said on the occasion that the state tobacco control cell and the administration of these districts made consistent efforts towards securing tobacco smoke-free status.
