The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 8,000 on the convicts, Sobhit Kumar alias Rahul, 25, a Sector-31 resident, who was pursuing hotel management in Dera Bassi, and Gurdeep Singh alias Lovely, 25, a Sector-37 resident.

The UT police had booked nine students on the complaint of Sanjeev Kumar, who was injured in the brawl on January 23, 2010.

In his complaint, Sanjeev had said that he was sitting in an ahata (tavern) when the accused asked him for a drink and when he refused to oblige them, they assaulted him.

He had alleged that Sobhit attacked him with a kirpan, while Gurdeep hit him with rods and other accused also assaulted him with rods. He had also alleged that even his friend Abhijeet was assaulted as he tried to save him. The accused had then fled the spot threatening him and his friend of dire consequences.

The court, however, on August 22 had acquitted seven other students booked in the case, as the prosecution failed to prove allegations against them.
