Verdict on CBI probe plea reserved

The Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday reserved its judgment on a petition for letting the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) examine the alleged murder of the daughter-in-law of former Patiala mayor Jaspal Singh in February.

Justice Amol Rattan Singh reserved the judgment after the conclusion of arguments in the case filed by Amarjit Singh Sodhi, father of victim Parampreet Kaur. The first-information report (FIR) was lodged on February 23 at the Kotwali police station in Patiala, under Sections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intent in crime) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The petitioner had alleged that Parampreet's in-laws had first poisoned and then strangulated her.

Punjab's inspector general of police (crime) RPS Brar leads the special investigating team (SIT) that has asked for two more months to finish the task. However, the petitioner's counsel is of the view that the SIT has not investigated even the basic things property, and so the assignment should be moved to the CBI.
