12 injured, 30 houses damaged as tornado hits Fazilka village
A tornado hit a village in Fazilka district, causing injuries to one dozen villagers besides damaging over 30 houses, while also causing losses to agricultural fields, especially kinnow orchards, Friday evening.
A tornado hit a village in Fazilka district, causing injuries to one dozen villagers besides damaging over 30 houses, while also causing losses to agricultural fields, especially kinnow orchards, Friday evening.
As per information, at about 4pm, amid rain, a tornado hit Baikainwala village, situated 17km from Fazilka, causing damage to several houses, uprooting trees and damaging kinnow orchard. No loss to cattle was reported.
Twelve persons who sustained injuries include Shimla Rani, Surinder Kaur, Bimla Rani, Saurabh, Ravi, Raj Singh, Rattan Singh and Mohan Lal, who were hospitilised at civil hospital Abohar.
“Few of the injured remained buried under the debris for sometime but were rescued by villagers,” said an official who visited the spot.
“It was quite scary to see gusty winds blow along with sand. Impact of the tornado was limited to 1-2 kilometer area in the outskirts of the village which prevented any further losses,” said Raj Singh, a local resident. He said impact of the tornado was felt for about 5-7 minutes.
Fear gripped the vicinity, as it was first such incident in the village, situated close to the international border.
Senu Duggal, deputy commissioner, Fazilka, who while accompanied by Fazilka MLA Narinder Pal Sawna, went to the affected area said that about 2-2.5km area of the village had been adversely hit, causing loss to property and agriculture.
“We have provided accommodation to the persons who lost houses in this natural calamity. They have been put up at local government school. From Saturday, the process will commence to assess the loss of property, crop and same will be compensated by the state government,” said Duggal.
