125 killed in road accidents in Kurukshetra in 6 months

As many as 125 people have lost their lives in road accidents in Kurukshetra district till June 28 this year. As per the figures shared by the traffic police, Kurukshetra, a total of 323 people sustained injuries and 125 people have died in 221 road accidents that took place in the district from January 1 to till date. Though the district police and administration had set a target to cut the death toll in road accidents to 23%, death has reported an increase of 29%.

Taking a note of the rising number of deaths in road accidents, city magistrate Harpreet Kaur held a meeting with officials concerned and they were directed to take safety measures to put a check to road accidents by identifying accident-prone areas in the district. Strict directions were given to the traffic police to challan people riding two-wheelers without a helmet.

Kaur said that under a pilot project to prevent road accidents, the speed of vehicles would be monitored by installing special cameras on GT Road (NH44) in Shahbad. A control room of these CCTV cameras will be set up at the mini-secretariat, Kurukshetra, and these cameras will help to identify and challan vehicles for traffic rule violation. Later, the CCTVs will be installed at Ladwa and Pehowa towns.

She told the officers that preventing road accidents is also the moral responsibility. The police officials were directed to issue challans to drivers for over speeding, without helmet, without seat belt and using mobile phone while driving, drunken driving and lane violation.

On the other hand, Kurukshetra superintendent of police Surinder Singh Bhoria said that the police have taken strict action against the violators of traffic rules as a total 6,805 challans were issued during this period. The SP said that a total of 2,706 challans were issued for wrong parking, 815 for riding without helmet, 393 for over-speeding and 421 vehicles were challaned for lane violation on NH-44. Regional Transport Authority (RTA) secretary Urmil Sheokand said that strict action was being taken against the overloading vehicles as in May a fine of ₹1.16 crore has been recovered from 302 overloading vehicles in the district. She said that vehicles carrying more than the permitted load on the roads will not be allowed under any circumstances.
