94 achievers to be honoured at Mohali Independence Day function
The awardees will be felicitated during the function at Shaheed Major Harminder Pal Singh Government College, Phase 6, where minister Harbhajan Singh ETO will unfurl the National Flag
As many as 94 individuals have been selected for recognition at the district-level Independence Day celebrations in Mohali on August 15. The list covers government employees from several departments as well as residents, social workers, sports personalities, educators, students and community contributors.
The awardees will be felicitated during the function at Shaheed Major Harminder Pal Singh Government College, Phase 6, where Punjab public works minister Harbhajan Singh ETO will unfurl the National Flag.
13 police personnel, 2 fire officers among awardees
Around 13 police personnel have been recognised for carrying out their duties with diligence, dedication and honesty.
The list comprises one sub-inspector, three assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs), two head constables, five senior constables and two constables.
The police awardees listed in the document include sub-inspector Kuldeep Singh, ASIs Gurdeep Singh, Karanveer Singh, Gulab Singh; head constables Jaswant Singh and Manoj Saini; senior constables Harpreet Singh, Parvinder Singh, Gagandeep Singh, Sapinderveer Singh, and Ranjit Singh; and constables Sultan Singh and Rajat Goyal.
Two sub-fire officers, Rajinder Pal and Sikander Singh, will also be honoured. Rajinder Pal displayed true courage in response to a gas-leak incident at Purab Apartments this year. Pal, along with his team, entered the apartment after a cylinder leak was reported, located the cylinder and safely removed it despite the risk to their own lives. Their timely intervention helped prevent the leak from escalating into a major emergency and protected other residents of the complex.
Govt employees from multiple departments
A substantial portion of the list comprises officials and employees recognised for their official duties. From the education department, the awardees include teachers, lecturers, school heads and other staff, including Rajinder Singh, a centre teacher; an ETT teacher Princy; Gurlal Singh, lecturer in Physics and master trainer; science teachers Parul Thakur and Archana Saini; head teachers Lakhwira Kaur and Kulwinder Kaur, Harish Kapil; and officials associated with government schools.
The agriculture department has nominated Simranjit Kaur, an agriculture assistant manager, for her contribution towards farmer welfare and taking government facilities to farmers. A PSPCL employee from the Aerocity area has also been included for commendable work.
Officials and employees from the district administration and allied government departments also figure prominently. They include district development and panchayat officer (DDPO) Parambir Kaur, personnel associated with transport and revenue-related work, the SDM office, district hospital, audit and inspection wings, Anganwadi services and other field-level assignments.
The list also includes municipal corporation employees, including junior assistants, clerical staff, sanitation workers, a sewer man, and supervisory staff.
Residents recognised for social service, sports
The document separately records a sizeable group of residents and community contributors. About 35 community awardees are included in the list, covering social workers, professionals, volunteers, sports personalities, students and representatives of civil society organisations.
Among them are people recognised for social service, flood-relief work, environmental initiatives and community welfare. The Eco Plantation Association, Sector 69, for instance, has been recognised for planting around 15,000 trees along roadsides, vacant spaces and village roads.
Sports achievements account for another prominent category. Fencing, gymnastics, judo, boxing, hockey, basketball, kayaking and canoeing achievers and coaches have been selected. Jaganbir Singh Bajwa and Anu have been recognised for winning two bronze medals each in different events at the Asian championship.
The list also includes students who secured medals at national-level competitions, as well as professionals and organisations recognised for community service.
Dist admn honours lone surviving freedom fighter
The district administration on Friday felicitated Gurdeep Singh, son of Bagga Singh, the only living freedom fighter in Mohali district, at his residence in village Jhajjo on the eve of the 80th Independence Day, recognising his contribution to the freedom struggle.
Following directions of the Punjab government and deputy commissioner Komal Mittal, officials of municipal council Banur visited Singh’s residence to formally invite him to the district-level Independence Day celebrations being held on August 15 at Government College, Phase 6, Mohali.
However, Singh expressed his inability to attend the function due to his health condition. Consequently, the municipal council officials honoured him at his residence and extended Independence Day greetings on behalf of the district administration.
Speaking on the occasion, Singh extended his greetings to the citizens of the country. He said that, for him and many other freedom fighters, the first morning of Independence remained an unforgettable and cherished memory even decades later.
The district-level Independence Day celebrations will be held on August 15 at Government College, Phase 6, Mohali. The administration’s decision to felicitate Singh at his residence ensured that his health did not prevent him from being part of the district’s Independence Day observance.
Singh’s family members, including his son Sukhvir Singh, daughter-in-law Paramjit Kaur, grandsons Parvinder Singh, Karamjit Singh and Prabhkirat Singh, besides other relatives, were present during the felicitation.
