“Police personnel, who were arrested by CBI, ACB, Chandigarh in corruption case, have been placed under suspension and departmental enquiries/proceedings have been initiated against them. They have been transferred to Police Lines, Chandigarh,” read the official release of Chandigarh Police.

ASI Ravinder Kumar and head constable Randeep Singh Rana were arrested and sent to two-day CBI custody on Wednesday. They will be produced before a CBI court on Friday.

The cops, who were deployed at the Sector-24 police post, have been booked under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code on the basis of transcripts of conversation between them and complainant Ranjeet Singh.

Ranjeet had on March 15 directly approached the CBI with his complaint that Rana, who was his former tenant, had been threatening to implicate him in a fake rape case and sought 20,000 to back down.

He alleged that Rana had already taken 10,000 from him on March 10 and later mounted pressure on him to meet ASI Kumar.

After Ranjeet lodged a complaint with SP, CBI, Chandigarh, a trap was laid as per which the complainant was to record the conversation between him and the cops. On meeting the cops, Ranjeet agreed to pay the remaining amount, but he was on March 17 asked to pay 1 lakh. Ranjeet informed the CBI that he agreed to arrange 50,000 as the first instalment.
